Help For The Troubled Child In Therapeutic Boarding Schools
Today's environment has created an increase in drug and alcohol abuse among young people. ADHD, autism, eating disorders, and anger mangement issues are driving parents and teachers to distraction. Therapeutic boarding schools may hold the key to improvement.
In the case of drug or alcohol abuse, removing the child from peers and easy availability of their chosen poison is proven solution. A therapeutic school offers traditional academics and targeted therapy. Many students complete a twelve step program while enrolled. A typical stay is about a school year and most students continue to improve afterwards.
Most schools are in a rural area and supervision is constant. Wilderness schools are popular. The students have an opportunity to get out, hike, camp and learn survival skills while in therapy.
Schools that focus on emotional problems often use animal therapy, combined with group and individual therapy. Students learn animal care with dogs, cats, rabbits, and even horses. Having the responsibility to care for something, gives these kids a sense of purpose and takes the focus off their own problems.
ADHD and autism are difficult to treat at home. Parents may have other children to consider, one or more jobs, and may not have the time or the skill to deal with these kinds of problems. Autistic children need to have a very structured environment and school provides that. With therapy and programs targeted to their particular problem, they can reach their full potential.
There is a great deal of guilt for parents who choose to send their child away even if they know they are doing what's best for the child. Finding a school that is suitable will, in the long run, benefit the whole family immensely. Day programs also exist, but may not be practical for some families.
The enrollment process can be lengthy. The student must be thoroughly tested and parent and other family members are frequently interviewed. This process insures getting the best possible help for the child. I have friends whose daughter struggled with an eating disorder. Traditional therapy was no help. They felt terrible sending her far from home, but she is now happy, healthy, and attending college.
Don't feel guilty. Research and visit some schools. Your child will thank you for it later in life.
